How To Get Red State Trumpers To Wear A Mask

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

[Georgia Governor Brian] Kemp has preferred a softer approach [than mandatory mask-wearing]. He embarked on a seven-city “Wear A Mask” tour last week and has warned Georgians that not donning a face covering could imperil a college football season.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for any effort by GOP leaders and any reason cited by GOP voters to wear a mask. However, it is impossible to feel good about the reality of decision-making by followers of Trump (both elected and electors):

Scientists tell you refusing to wear a mask will imperil a person’s life? So what.

A guy who ran for office with TV ads of him using his big truck to round up immigrants tells you refusing to wear a mask could imperil a college football season? Oh, damn, better get a bright red UGA one real quick-like now.

Again… I’m happy for any additional mask-wearing. But how can one realize this is the moral decision-making of 40% of voting America, and not feel profound sadness for what has become of us. When did our moral compass begin to only point towards ourselves? When did we lose a sense of sacrifice for the common good during times of peril? When did we come to treat our fellow citizens with such disgust that we literally won’t even lift a mask to save their lives?

Those are (somewhat) rhetorical questions. But this one is not: what can we do to regain what we have lost?

I hate over-simplification, and this one simple answer certainly will not solve all of this at all. However, I think it is beyond question that voting out every single person who has supported and encouraged and protected our narcissistic, greedy, avarice-driven, revenge-oriented POTUS, is a good start.

Repealing media ownership rules and re instituting the Fairness Doctrine immediately is another. Reagan did away with both at the recommendation of his press secretary Roger Ailes, so they could create a conservative media that would tell their point of view. How important was this? Ailes was certain that if something like Fox had existed in ’72, Nixon would not have had to resign.

They literally changed media in this country so that Nixon and anyone as corrupt as him in the future would have the support of enough Americans that their corruption would not be enough to drive them from public office.

Those are the type of morals we now see infecting a sizable minority of this country, and we have to undo what was done to create and encourage this sort of destructive force in our country.
