The Day 1 summary of opinion in the Twitterverse is that the Republicans are un-ethical, pathetic, and in no way going to be successful defending Trump by flailing around with conspiracy theories. Wrong. They already are being successful, to the only people who matter to them.
Which is exactly how Democrats and liberals become angry and disappointed when things don’t turn out the way they want. They think rationally, see the Republicans saying idiotic things and lies and conspiracy theories while really not defending Trump’s behavior, and can’t understand why Trump isn’t held accountable. Here’s why…
You have to understand the GOP’s goal. Their goal is NOT to:
- Prove Trump innocent (he’s not and they know it)
- Keep Trump from being impeached by the House (he will be)
- Get Independents to be against impeachment (they are already for it and the hearings just started)
The GOP’s goal is the same as Trump’s goal (because it is his party): To create enough sound-bites for conservative media to rile up the minority of voters who would let Trump get away with murdering someone in the middle of 5th Ave.
Why is that their goal?
Because with their base solidly behind Trump (believing in deep state conspiracies, etc.), that ensures NOT ONE REPUBLICAN WILL VOTE FOR IMPEACHMENT. NOT ONE. And that is the goal. To keep Trump from being impeached so he can keep appointing extremely radical judges who favor businesses over citizens, religious fanatics over separation of church and state, corruption and the ability of the wealthy and corporations to buy our elected (GOP) officials.
They don’t care about anything else. They don’t even care about re-election. Because if they keep him in the White House, they will have Russia, all the billionaires and their dark money PACs, all the state election officials, and all conservative media pushing for Trump’s re-election and they like their chances of pulling it off.
They look and sound crazy and corrupt to normal, rational people. And they don’t care. All they care about is scaring all the Republican elected officials into voting against impeachment because they will look at Republican voter opinions and worry about getting primaried and losing their power and privilege.
The entire party is corrupt and full of avarice.
